Student Charged in Mentor's Death
A graduate student who was driving when the Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Halberstam was killed in a car crash will be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, a district attorney announced Thursday.
Kevin Jones, a journalism student at the University of California at Berkeley was driving Halberstam to an interview with football legend Y.A. Tittle on April 23 when things took a turn for the worst. According to investigations, Jones made an illegal left turn on a red light into the path of an oncoming car that had a green light. The car smashed into the passenger side, killing the New York author Halberstam.
Eyewitness reports confirm that Jones did not make the turn from the left-turn lane, instead turning from a lane intended for traffic heading straight.
Jones is expected to be charged next week. His prior driving record, which showed two other accidents and a DUI, played a factor in the court's deliberations, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
