Superheroes for the Super Bowl
Variety has reported which new movies will have featured TV spots during the 2009 Super Bowl television broadcast. In a bid for 2009 box office supremacy, new TV spots will be shown for Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. Revenge of the Fallen is the sequel to 2007's hit Transformers, based on the popular Hasbro toy line and cartoon from the 1980s. G.I. Joe, of course, is also based on the Hasbro 1980s toys of the same name which spawned an equally popular cartoon series as well as comics depicting the adventures of the G.I. Joe team.
A TV spot for 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine is still "up in the air." A TV spot is likely, but as of last Thursday, Fox has not bought any airtime for the broadcast. Wolverine, Night at the Museum 2, and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs would more than likely be the films they want to highlight.
Also set to be shown on February 1 are TV spots for Star Trek, Angels and Demons, Monsters vs. Aliens (which will be in 3-D), The Fast and the Furious, Up, and Land of the Lost.
As of now, Warner Bros. has yet to buy any airtime for TV spots for their upcoming 2009 releases Terminator: Salvation, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Watchmen. All of those movies are big budget tentpoles they would more than likely want to promote to the Super Bowl viewing audience.
