'Switched at Birth' Recap: 'Persistence of Memory'

Alina Lakhdhir

Monday’s episode of Switched at Birth, called “Persistence of Memory,” begins with Bay closely examining a picture of a pregnant Regina. Kathryn then calls her to dinner, and tells her that Daphne has cooked a meal. Bay then asks if the food is vegetarian, and Kathryn says it is. However, the food is actually good.

Bay goes down and learns that Daphne has made Greek lasagna. Kathryn asks Daphne if she has taken a cooking class. When Daphne replies in the negative, Kathryn suggests that she go to Buckner Hall to take a cooking class. Both then turn to Bay tentatively, and Bay is quite supportive of this idea.

As Bay goes upstairs to her room, a distressed Toby approaches her and begs her for money. Bay refuses to give him money. Toby persists, and Bay says that she has already paid him back for the last time she borrowed money from him. The argument continues between the two. Bay tells him that she is saving up, but Toby guilt-trips her and tells her that she should support him.

When Bay finally relents and goes upstairs to her room, Toby calls out to her and says, “You owe me!”

The next day at school, Toby still looks distressed, and he asks his friend if there is any way he can earn money. He desperately needs to pay back the guy he betted against while playing poker.

Meanwhile, John and his friend, Dale, play golf. The two of them talk. John is still intent on suing the hospital and receiving settlement from them. Dale, however, thinks differently and tries to convince John that the hospital does not have that kind of money. He also tells John to give up trying to sue the hospital because it was “human error.”

At school, Bay and Daphne walk together. Bay then asks her if Toby has tried to borrow money from her. Daphne replies that he has not talked to her since the poker incident. Bay then shows her where her classroom is. Daphne does not have an interpreter in class because she refused to have one. So, she tries to read her teacher’s lips as she is explaining how to cook fries and burger. When she turns, however, Daphne does not know what she is saying. Daphne’s cooking partner, however, tries to tell Daphne what the instructor is saying when her back is turned.

As the class cooks, the instructor informs the class that when the bell rings, they must take out their fries. Daphne’s partner wanders off and talks to the teacher. Daphne is left alone at her cooking station, and she does not hear the bell go off. It is not until someone informs her that her fries are burning that Daphne realizes that she could not hear the bell ring. By this time, however, her fries are burned, and the fire alarm is going off.

Meanwhile, Bay goes to meet Emmett, who is waiting for Daphne outside of Buckner. Bay attempts to communicate with him. She asks to see the pictures he is taking with his camera, and she is quite impressed. Emmett also asks to see the picture that Bay has in her hand. It is Bay’s painted version of a pregnant Regina. As the two communicate, Bay tells Emmett about the car that Regina is leaning against. She tells Emmett that she cannot clearly see the parking sticker. Being helpful, Emmett tells her that he can find a way to zoom the picture.

After Daphne’s embarrassing incident, she and Kathryn meet Mr. Thatcher, the principal. Mr. Thatcher suggests that there be an interpreter for Daphne. After a slight protest, Daphne gives in and agrees to have an interpreter. Mr. Thatcher also suggests cochlear implantation for Daphne.

After the brief discussion with Mr. Thatcher, Kathryn encourages Daphne to consider cochlear implantation. She tells Daphne that it would be nice for Daphne to be able to hear music and others’ laughter.

Bay is determined to find out more information on her biological father. Emmett helps her as he brings information on the parking sticker and the license plate. Bay says, “Thank you” to Emmett out loud. She also learns how to say “thank you” in sign language.

Based on the license plate information, Bay and Emmett go to a garage and try to find the correct car with the proper license plate amongst a large group of cars. Hesitant at first, Bay refuses to look for the car. However, Emmett holds her hand and the two look for the car.

After much searching, Bay finally finds the car and sits inside it. She searches the entire car, but she only finds broken car parts.

“I don’t know what I was thinking,” Bay bursts out loud. She adds that she wonders what she was expecting. Did she expect her father to open his arms and say, “There you are! I’ve been waiting for you.”

After her outburst, however, she quickly apologizes to Emmett, who merely shrugs and smiles. Bay suddenly tells him, “You know what? You’re the best person I know.” Emmett smiles in response. The two find something that is related to a guitar.

Emmett tells Bay that when he and Daphne were little kids, they found a guitar case. However, there was not a guitar in the case. When Regina saw what the two had found, she freaked out and snatched the guitar case away from them. As Bay tries to get out more information from Emmett, he tells her that maybe the two of them could meet at his place and search the boxes in his garage. The guitar case could be in one of the boxes.

The next day in cooking class, Daphne endures mean looks from some of her classmates after they see her with an interpreter. They whisper behind her back and issue petty, mean comments. To make matters worse, their teacher announces that the class will bake something that will not require any heating whatsoever. She pointedly looks at Daphne as she says this. As the class cooks, Daphne’s cooking partner asks her out on a date.

Viewers are then shown a brief scene of John and Kathryn talking. John is still quite intent on suing the hospital. He tells Kathryn that suing is the only way to prevent such future happenings. “It’ll cost them and it will cost them big,” John says vehemently.

After class at Buckner, Daphne is quite upset that everyone in her class was making fun of her. She gloomily walks towards the road and does not notice the beeping car that almost hit her. Her cooking partner catches her just on time and asks her if she is okay.

Daphne goes home and talks to Regina. She tells her mother about the possibility of getting a cochlear transplant. She also informs her mother about the bell incident and almost getting run over by a car.

Regina tells Daphne to be more careful. She also tells Daphne that she could get a cochlear transplant if she wanted one. However, Regina is quick to note that Daphne may have gotten that idea from someone else because Daphne has never mentioned getting a cochlear transplant before. Regina also adds that Daphne should take her timer to the class instead of relying on the bell.

Frustrated, Daphne says, “I can’t bring my deaf stuff everywhere.”

Later that day, Regina goes to meet Kathryn and tells her that she should learn sign language instead of giving Daphne ideas about a cochlear implant.

“The sooner you [learn sign language], the sooner you’ll know what an incredible person you gave birth to,” Regina informs Kathryn.

That night, Daphne tells Bay about her horrible experiences. Daphne is surprised that Bay has not heard about her being the deaf girl in school. Bay attempts to cheer up Daphne by telling her others’ embarrassing stories. Daphne also tells Bay about all of her bad experiences when she went to a normal school. As they are talking, Bay receives Emmett’s text, which said, “Coast is clear. Come on now.”

As Bay leaves, she tells Daphne, “If you can survive all that, Buckner shouldn’t be bad. I hope you stay.”

After Bay arrives at Emmett’s place, the two search through the boxes. They find Daphne’s birth certificate, and Bay discovers that her father’s name is Angelo Sorrentino. Bay also finds the CD her father gave to Regina. She goes home and listens to the CD. She dances to the music.

Meanwhile, Toby is still trying to get out of his messy situation. In the middle of the night, he sneaks into school and steals the exam papers. In return, he was supposed to get $1,000. The next day, Toby’s friend, Locke, warns him about an ongoing investigation that involves the exam papers.

Daphne takes chocolate mousse to her teacher, who exclaims that they are delicious. Daphne then informs her teacher that she took an advanced level cooking class and requests the teacher not to change her teaching style.

After talking to her teacher, Daphne offers some chocolate mousse to her interpreter. He signs, “Oh my God. They are delicious!

Daphne then sees the other girls staring at the chocolate mousse. “I’d offer you one, but you might catch being deaf,” Daphne tells them.

Bay searches Angelo Sorrentino. She texts Emmett, “45 Angelo Sorrentinos in US; 3 in Missouri; 1 is mine.”

John and Kathryn talk about suing the hospital once again. John tells Kathryn that the hospital does not want a settlement. Instead, they want to go on trial. John tells Kathryn that the hospital found something that they can use against them.

“Like what?” Kathryn says.

“I don’t know” John replies.

Kathryn then goes to Regina and signs to her, telling her that she was right about the sign language and she wants to learn.

The scene closes with Regina opening her closet, and the viewers see a guitar case inside her closet.
