For years, Barbie has been an icon for children. She’s been everything, including cheerleader, doctor, and even the president. Now, she’s gotten another transformation.
The doll, made by Italian fashion label Tokidoki, wears her hair in a pink bob. She dons sky high sparkly stilettos and skin tight leopard print pants with tattoos on her chest, up her neck and down her arm. She also carries a dog wearing a cactus outfit on a leash named Bastardino.
As expected, parents flew into an outrage over the doll. On a website for tween-aged parents, Daily Mail reports many expressed their concerns over the image the doll conveyed. One poster, wrote “Encouraging children that tattoos are cool is wrong, wrong, wrong. Mattel why not put a cigarette and a beer bottle in her hand while you're at it!'
However, not everyone seems too hyped up over the doll. Journalist Jenna McCarthy wrote for ivillage sarcastically commenting about the controversy saying“ You know because Barbie’s always been such a great role model” She proceeds to point out the dolls absurd body measurements, and “perfect” body image, which has always been a hot issue for young girls.
Also, she points out the doll is released for $50, which isn’t an amount geared for little girls, and also that the company is selling it as a collector’s item.
Tokidoki Barbie has sold out, and Mattel has no intentions to discontinue the doll.
