Barks will reprise the role which she has played twice on the London stage

Country music star Taylor Swift will not be making her return to the movies in Tom Hooper’s film adaptation of the stage version of Les Miserables as Eponine. Instead, the role will go to Samantha Barks, who played the role in recent London productions.

According to Broadway World, Producer Cameron Mackintosh announced Barks’ casting at the end of Tuesday’s performance of Oliver! at the Manchester Palace, in which Barks performed. She later took to Twitter to express her excitement, writing, “Most incredible moment of my life!!!! X.” She has continued to tweet thank yous to followers and later wrote, “Words cannot express how much I appreciate all the amazing support I have received from everyone! I haven't stopped smiling!! :) :) :)”

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Barks played the role twice, first in a 2010 London production and then at last year’s 25th anniversary concert at London’s O2 Arena.

E! News reports that Barks beat out a list of A-listers, including Swift, Glee’s Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood.

The film will still carry a list of big name actors. Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway have all been cast. The script was written by Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Gladiator writer William Nicholson and produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Debra Hayward and Mackintosh, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Universal plans to release the film on Dec. 7.

As Broadway World notes, Barks made her stage debut in a national tour of Cabaret and appeared on television in Disney’s Groove High.
