Mike McCarthy has signed a five year extension to remain the Green Bay Packers head coach through the 2012 season, the Associated Press reports. The new deal will reportedly pay him about $4 million per year ( I'm definitely in the wrong field. I gotta play some more Madden!!!!).
"Mike brings tremendous passion, work ethic and structure to his position ... these are the traits we saw in him when he was hired, and we're very happy for the success we have had under his guidance." general manager Ted Thompson said.
"I think it's great to have five years to continue to reach our goal," coach McCarthy said after reaching the agreement. Both sides were counting on getting a new deal done before the Super Bowl, but negotiations were held up due to McCarthy prepping his team for the playoffs, and Thompson was out on the road scouting.
Next on the menu? The annual Brett Favre watch. McCarthy says he speaks to Favre every seven to ten days to see whether the 17-year veteran wants to come back for one more season.
"He's going to take a couple of weeks to think about it. As I've stated before, it's more of a personal issue as far as, if you're going to come back, as opposed to professional. I think he clearly shows ... has clearly shown that he still has a lot of football left in his tank," McCarthy said.
