Thousands Celebrate Michael Jackson's 51st Birthday in New York
Thousands of Michael Jackson fans showed up at New York's Prospect Park to celebrate Michael Jackson's life on what would have been the singer's 51st birthday.
The bash, hosted by filmmaker Spike Lee, was a welcome change from the months of grieving over Jackson's death. Fans danced and sang in celebration of Jackson's life.
Despite the sporadic rain, partygoers arrived late Saturday in various Jackson getups. Fedoras, white gloves, and Jackson memorabilia were seen everywhere.
DJs set the mood by playing Jackson classics ranging from the Jackson Five songs to Jackson's most recent tunes.
Lee, who directed two videos for Jackson in 1996, said, "I was just like everyone else. I loved his talent," the Associated Press reported.
Many other fans echoed the sentiment. "I grew up listening to Michael Jackson. I was 9 years old and he opened up a whole new world of music and dancing to me," said ardent fan Peter Brodie.
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz even designated the day as Michael "King of Pop" Jackson Memorial Day.
