Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight Rises does not hit theaters until July 20, but IMAX midnight screenings for the film have already begun to sell out. According to reports, tickets for July 19 midnight showings in IMAX theaters in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco have already sold out.
Deadline reports that several of the major theaters that played the six-minute prologue for the film before Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol decided to sell tickets for their midnight screenings of The Dark Knight Rises. Batman fans quickly jumped on the opportunity to buy their tickets seven months in advance on Fandango. Tickets at AMC Loews Lincoln Square theater in New York have already sold out, while just two wheelchair spots remained Tuesday at AMC’s Loews Universal City cineplex in Los Angeles. Tickets were still available for the Rave IMAX in Los Angeles and at the Metreon in San Francisco.
Slash Film was the first to report on Monday that tickets were being sold at these theaters, also noting that TheFilmStage confirmed that midnight shows had been sold out “for weeks.”
No additional times have been made available for purchase at the websites for AMC, IMAX, Fandango or Movietickets.com.
Business Insider notes that this is the earliest tickets have been available for pre-order since tickets for Avatar were made available four months in advance in 2009. Lionsgate had made a big announcement that tickets for The Hunger Games would be available in February, but that film only comes out a month later on March 23. A Fandango representative also confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that it is unusual to sell tickets so far in advance.
The Dark Knight Rises is Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film and stars Christian Bale in the title role. Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway are also in the film.
