Tiger Woods has reacted to being chosen as one of two captain’s picks for the Presidents Cup, revealing that he is “honored” to be a part of the U.S. team.

“They wanted me on the team and I’m honored,” he told reporters early Wednesday.

When he was asked whether he believes he deserved to be picked, the 14-time major champion nodded yes.

Woods has missed two majors and a handful of other tournaments this summer because of left knee and Achilles’ tendon injuries that have yet to improve sufficiently.

While Woods has been unable to play over the past several weeks as he continues to recover from lingering medical issues, he made an appearance at a charity event hosted by Notah Begay III, his former roommate at Stanford University.

Fred Couples announced last week that he planned to use his captain’s pick on Woods, despite initially claiming that he wanted to see the former No. 1-ranked player compete in a few more events before coming to a decision.

“He’s the best player in the world forever,” he said at the time. “Is he playing well right now? No. He almost won Augusta four months ago, so you don’t do that by playing poor golf.”
