Tobey Maguire No Longer 'Spider-Man'

'Spider-Man' heads in a new direction with change of cast and director.

Well, it's official. "Spider-Man 3" was the last of the Spider-Man chronicles for actor Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi. Sony Pictures is in the works for finding a new leading man and director.

Despite the criticism the third installment of the saga generated, "Spider-Man 4" will be produced. It will feature a young Peter Parker struggling with regular teenage problems along with incredible superhuman spectacles. The film currently holds a summer 2012 release date.

Although the "Spider-Man 4" film will incorporate some major changes, those involved in the film are still positive as the franchise takes a new turn. Raimi stated, "...the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."

Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures claimed, “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

Meanwhile, Maguire reminisced about his past role, "I am so proud of what we accomplished with the Spider-Man franchise over the last decade. Beyond the films themselves I have formed some deep and lasting friendships. I am excited to see the next chapter unfold in this incredible story."
