Tom Cruise agrees to play Jack Reacher in 'One Shot'

The actor will play the character from Lee Child's best-selling novel series.

Tom Cruise has announced that he will be playing the part of Jack Reacher in the upcoming film, One Shot. The movie is based on the best-selling novel series by Lee Child, and Tom Cruise's character is a military officer turned drifter.

Jack Reacher is described as six foot five and weighing 250 pounds. According to the New York Times, some of the series' fans are upset about the five foot seven Cruise playing the character. But, Child has approved the casting.

The film, One Shot, is being directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also directed the recent Cruise movie, Valkyrie. Shooting is expected to start in the fall, and will be produced by Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions.

Cruise is currently filming Rock of Ages, due out in 2012, and he will next be seen on the big screen in Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol.
