Tony Award's Showcase Past and Future

The 2008 Tony Awards proved that Broadway is heading in a more modern direction with help from its roots.

From old favorites to fresh new sounds, the 62nd Annual Tony Awards didn't fail to disappoint fans of The Great White Way.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific revival dominated Broadway's top honors with seven awards on Sunday, followed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning play August: Osage County with five.

The night's biggest winner was In The Heights, which was crowned Best Musical at the shows finale. The Latin, hip-hop infused musical also walked away with wins for choreography, orchestrations, and score.

The shows creator/lyricist/star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, rapped his acceptance speech for Best Original Score in what was probably a Tony first.

But the awards, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, weren't just about the future of Broadway.

The original Broadway casts of The Lion King and Rent were also on hand at the awards. The show kicked off with a performance of "The Circle of Life," and midway through, the past and present casts of Rent sang "Season's of Love" to honor the shows award-winning run.
