Today is Earth Day. As we celebrate the earth’s natural environment, it is necessary to look at some actions we can take, ourselves, to save our precious planet. If you have no idea what you can do, let’s get you inspired with a top listcountdown of eco-friendly movies:
6. African Cats
Earth Day is the perfect day to release the nature documentary film, African Cats. The Disney nature production follows a lion and cheetah family trying to survive on the African savanna. In celebration of Earth Day, a part of the movie's profits will be donated to the African Wildlife Foundation and their effort to preserve Kenya's Amboseli Wildlife Corridor.
5. Avatar
Even though Avatar is set on a fictional planet, you can’t deny the fact that the movie raised awareness of environmental issues on our own nonfictional planet. The story focuses on the Na’vi, a tribe that lives in peace with nature on their home planet, Pandora. Yet they are threatened by humans who will stop at nothing in order to get very valuable natural resources. The story not only shows the beauty of nature, it also shows the destruction of mankind.
4. Gorillas in the Mist
Zoologist Dian Fossey studied the endangered mountain gorillas of Rwanda. Her inspiring story was made into a film, starring Sigourney Weaver. The 1988 biopic shows a rich but fragile wildlife, and reminds us of the need to preserve it before it is too late.
3. Erin Brockovich
Erin Brockovich, an unemployed single mother of three, took on a legal fight against the California energy corporation, Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The story is based on a true story of Brockovich who brought PG&E down, accusing them of polluting a city water supply. The movie sets the perfect example of everyday people making a change and fighting for a better and safer environment.
2. My Neighbor Totoro
The Japanese movie, My Neighbor Totoro, focuses on the wonder of being a child. But instead of showing the 10- and 4-year-old girls playing video games all day, we follow them while they explore the magical backyard of their new house. The film shows nature at its purest and how we can live in harmony with the rich environment around us.
1. WALL-E
In a post-apocalyptic world, mankind has deserted Earth, leaving only endless landscapes of garbage behind. It’s a sad sight, and a prediction to the fatal, irreversible state our beloved Earth might really be heading. The main character, a small, lovable robot named WALL-E, was designed to clean up the waste-covered Earth. He sets a great example to what Earth Day is all about -- making our world cleaner and safer in which to live.
