'Top Chef: Just Desserts' Recap: 'Sabotage'

Michael Pascua
The contestants have to turn savory food from the Beastie Boys into desserts.

After the water park challenge, only eight contestants remain. Orlando and the team discussed what should be next and some were thinking about ice sculpting challenges. Sally joked around about Katzie; Katzie wasn't as jaded as the rest of the teams. Gail introduced the chefs to Jordan Khan for the Quickfire Challenge. She announced that the contestants had to create a root vegetable-based dessert. Rebecca was worried because she didn't know much about the cooking world outside of desserts. The winner would have immunity and get $5,000.

Carlos - Celery Root
Chris - Jicama
Orlando - Radish
Matthew - Parsnip
Rebecca - Potato
Katz - Turnip
Megan - Burdock root
Sally - Turmeric

With one hour to cook, Chris was happy that he knew what jicama tasted like. Rebecca wasn't versed in root vegetables or savory food in general. Carlos decided to merge celery root and peanut butter. Halfway through the competition, Matthew understood some savory foods, but was most worried about Sally. Sally wanted to use Asian flavors so she added mango and curry. With time up, Gail and Jordan went to Rebecca and she admitted to not knowing how to cook; Gail reprimanded her. Chris tried to put jicama on as a garnish and was warned that he couldn't be judged. Jordan thought that everyone did a great job, but Rebecca and Carlos didn't do well. The top dishes were Sally and Matthew, but the winner was Sally. She got immunity again and won $5,000.

Gail introduced Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys for the Elimination Challenge and Rebecca squealed like a little girl. Ad-Rock explained sampling music and paralleled it to sampling food. The challenge was that the contestants would have to choose two foods from the Beastie Boys’ pantry. The foods were references in songs which sadly was mostly savory food. Gail announced a twist; the contestants would have to pick a dish for another contestant to "sabotage" their contestants. They would have to present at a street art gallery.

Megan - Brass Monkey, Whiskey (Onions - Katzie)
Matt - Whisky cornbread (Mashed potatoes & Gravy - Chris)
Carlos - Popcorn Bacon (Cucumber - Sally)
Chris - Pizza and pork and beans (Ravioli - Megan)
Sally - Cheddar and Prosciutto (Chicken - Carlos)
Katzie - Bot butter and fries (Gorgonzola - Orlando)
Orlando - Rum, Sugar, Coffee & Cream (Peas - Matt)
Rebecca - Ham and a 40 of beer. (Falafel - Sally)

The contestants had memories of the Beastie Boys as children playing things called "cassette tapes." Matt considered a potato cheesecake after getting bombed by Chris. Chris was worried about his dish because he didn't realize that he should have analyzed the pantry instead of being so whimsical. Orlando ran around trying to figure out food but was getting drunk off of rum. We get a shot of him stumbling past contestants. Sally butchered chicken so she decided to make a cake and somehow add chicken to it. She wanted to play aggressive since she had immunity. Katzie knew that she was going to take risks. Rebecca knew how to use beer, but she failed to make falafel. She decided to make a panna cotta. Orlando used stocked cookies from the pantry. Carlos wanted to incorporate the street art look in his dish to tie in with the location they would be serving in. With time running out, Chris was worried about everything. Everyone ran trying to finish their dishes and headed out for the night.

The next day, the contestants woke up to the worries of the competition. Katzie was worried that she sabotaged Megan, her good friend. Chris was worried about his wife and very young daughter with hard complication. Matt explained that he also missed his wife then admitted on television that his daughter was an accident.

The contestants arrived at the art gallery and had one hour to prep. Matt tried to make gravy foam with his gravy to go all the way with his dish. The guests started to arrive and the contestants were really happy talking to contestants. Katzie tried to have fun with her own dish by having a lot of sides. Marcel from Top Chef arrived and hugged Sally; apparently they were friends before and he was the reason why Sally auditioned. The judges arrived and talked to Carlos first. His panna cotta dish got positive feedback. Orlando's parfait was okay but the judges were thrown off by the store bought cookie. Megan's pudding cake was a bit dry and fell apart. Sally was shocked when the judges arrived but she explained her toffee pudding; the chicken skin was positively taken. Katzie was next and she explained her pommes frites; Johnny thought it was all over the place. Rebecca was next and her panna cotta tasted like garlic; her beer ice cream was weak. Chris was next and he explained his brownie and Gail thought it was too weird. There's texture, but no flavor of pork and beans. Matt had his cheesecake and the gravy tastes like gravy; all of the flavors were there. Matt was worried that he was going home because of his dish.

Gail called Katzie, Megan, and Rebecca to the Judges' Table. The three women had the least favorite dishes. Rebecca was psyched out by the falafel; it was filled with too much garlic. She started to cry about the situation, even though she knew that everyone had weird dishes. Megan struggled with tying everything together. As a pudding cake, it was too dry. Katzie admitted to taking a risk not working. The judges were confused by having too many combinations of flavors. Matthew, Chris, and Sally were called up next and the three contestants were the best dishes. Sally's dessert was great combined with the chicken skin. Chris's brownie and pizza stick worked well. His intentional sabotage came together. Matthew's gravy cheesecake had all the flavors and he managed to deliver a great dish. The winning dish was Matthew.

After judging, Rebecca was eliminated. Maybe because she was a big fan of the Beastie Boys that her judgment was clouded.
