'Transformers' Sequel Collects $55 Million First Day in Theaters

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen breaks the Wednesday box-office record.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen transformed into the title-holder for the Wednesday box-office record. The "Transformers" sequel raked in $55 million on Wednesday, surpassing "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," to shatter the record, MTV reports.

According to MTV, Director Michael Bay's latest installment of "Transformers" showed up "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix's" $44 million opening total in 2007 by more than $10 million.

"Transformers" reportedly broke another Wednesday opening record after selling $16 million in ticket sales during its midnight showings across 4,200 theaters. The film takes a seat in third place behind "The Dark Knight" and "Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith" for the highest opening totals any day of the week.

Although the sequel has received less than impressive reviews, MTV says that it is still likely to steal the record for the highest grossing Wednesday-Sunday opening. "Spider-Man 2" currently holds this record after grossing $154.2 million during the five-day stretch in 2004.

Paramount, the studio backing the "Transformers" sequel, is scheduled to release its official totals on Thursday, as the film continues progressing toward the $319 million that the first "Transformers" movie grossed during its tenure in theaters in 2007.
