Police in Los Angeles were called to remove protestors from a community Garden: including actress Daryl Hannah.

The garden had been scheduled for demolition to make way for a new warehouse. Members of the community banded together to protest the destruction of their garden. The protestors are quite committed. Some are squatting on the land, and refusing to move; others chained themselves to trees. Hannah climbed into a tree, and had to be removed by the police force. Approximately 100 plus police officers were called to the scene to put down the protest. Overall, 44 arrests were made, including the arrest of Hannah, who released a statement shortly before being removed and arrested from the tree.

Hannah stated, "I'm very confident this is the morally right thing to do, to take a principled stand in solidarity with the farmers." With the help of other celebrities including Joan Baez and Danny Glover the farmers have been able to raise $6 million of the $16 million required to save the garden.

However, Ralph Horowitz, the landowner of the plot, sees the squatting differently. In a statement Horowitz said, "I feel that the gardeners have been on the land for 14 years, almost 15 years for free. After 15 years, you say thank you." The farmers are farming off of land that Horowitz pays $ 25,000 to $ 30,000 a month to upkeep.
