Tropic Thunder Earns Number One at Box Office

Stiller's Tropic Thunder takes number one at theaters.

The Associated Press reports that Ben Stiller's comedy is number one in theaters this weekend, bumping the record setting The Dark Knight to number two.

The controversial movie earned an estimated $26 million, ending The Dark Knight's four week spot at number one as it brought in an estimated $16.8 million.

Tropic Thunder has raised a total of $37 million since Wednesday, when it debuted in more than 3,000 theaters.

DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan showed excitement saying, "We're thrilled, quite frankly. It played out exactly how we hoped."

Why shouldn't they have had high hopes? Pineapple Express and Step Brothers that came before it both opened with high success.

Reportedly, there has been a trend it seems with R-rated comedies doing well with such titles as Knocked Up, Superbad and The Forty Year Old Virgin all being $100 million hits.

The film has an all star cast working in its favor as well, with Ben Stiller, Robert Downey, Jr., Tom Cruise, and Jack Black.

Stiller shows audiences his skills in the film as both co-writer and director of the film, and it will be interesting to keep a watch on the box office numbers as they keep rolling in.
