The Truth About Roman Polanski

HBO documentary explores the life and career of director Polanski.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski is put under the microscope by the new HBO documentary, "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired," DallasNews.com reveals.

The 74-year-old Polanski is currently residing in Paris, France. He cannot return to the U.S. as he could be arrested due to charges of underage sexual assault.

Polanski admitted to the accusations 30 years ago, but fled to Paris before convicted.

His victim, Samantha Geimer, now aged 45, claims Polanski didn't get a fair trial. She thinks the revelation of the truth is long overdue.

The film portrays and challenges the justice of the statutory-rape charges in 1977 against Polanski, filed by 13-year-old Geimer's mother.

According to Starpulse.com, the documentary strongly questions the fairness of these 1977 events and looks at the power of judges and what it means to be a celebrity. The movie also looks at the psychological effect of childhood trauma and the implications this has for shaping personality.

The director of the documentary, Marina Zenovich, stated: "In 2003, talk of his winning an Oscar (for The Pianist) and whether he'd risk coming to accept it started me thinking about this case because nobody knew exactly what happened. Fearing sensationalism, nobody would talk to me. It took five years. Eventually those involved realized I had good intentions and just wanted to tell the story. I met the girl's lawyer and then Samantha Geimer, the girl herself. Why she consented, I don't know. Even her mother talked to me. Now blonde, clear-eyed, 45, with three kids, Samantha lives in Hawaii and she basically has forgiven him."

"Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired" premieres Monday 9 June on HBO.
