Is "Twilight" the Next "Harry Potter"?
Based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling young adult series of the same name, Twilight, has fans anxious to line up outside of theaters for the film's release this Friday.
A story of the star-crossed love affair between a human girl and an immortal vampire, Twilight, as stated by Reuters, is said to not be dripping with scenes of bloodiness and sex- two key elements of the vampire genre. Instead, much emphasis is placed on teenage angst, the prom, and hot vampires, says SFGate.
Director Catherine Hardwicke wanted to portray the raw emotion and coming of age prevalent in Meyer's series. "There's so much drama," she said. "It's when you discover who you are. I liked just being drawn into this world, and I wanted to see how I could create that on film" (Los Angeles Times).
Hardwicke also witnessed firsthand the hysteria of young female readers when she paid Meyer a visit on her 2007 book tour. She had also overheard two pre-teen girls discussing the book for an hour, specifically talking about the vampire's soul, his connection to the human girl, and the evolution of humans and vampires (Los Angeles Times).
With so much youth fixation on the supernatural, in addition to over 17 million copies sold internationally, it's no wonder "Twilight" may very well become the next "Harry Potter" series in print and on the silver screen.
