Twitter Reads Minds?

A doctoral student has found a way to post twitter messages with electrical impulses generated by thought.

Twitter is sweeping the nation, and now it's sweeping our minds? Doctoral student Adam Wilson, student of biomedical engineering, posted a potentially life changing tweet on April 15, "Spelling with my brain," according to CNN.

Wilson reported that his lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison developed a way to post messages on Twitter with brainwaves alone. He sent messages by focusing on the letters he wanted to type, then the word "twit" at the bottom of the screen to post the message.

The significance of this breakthrough has not yet been realized. Potentially, it could be a lifeline for people whose brains function normally but are completely paralyzed from speech or movement because of injury or disease.

These are people who have ALS, like Stephen Hawking, or they have a brainstem stroke, or a high spinal-cord injury. There is nothing wrong with these people's brains. It's a normal person, locked into a lifeless, useless body," said Williams.

Williams was developing brain-computer technology for years. Now, there is a way to apply these developments in a useful, life changing way.
