Two Arrested in Killing of UNC Student Body President

The two suspects have been charged with first-degree murder.

Two suspects were charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the killing of University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson, though only one is in custody.

Demario James Atwater, 21, of Durham, was arrested and held without bond. Police said they are still searching for 17-year-old Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr., the second suspect.

Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian did not specify to which of the suspects shot and killed Carson, 22, of Athens, Ga., who was found dead last week about a mile from campus. She had been shot several times, including once in the temple.

In the investigation following the discovery of Carson's body, police focused their investigation on several ATM and convenience store photos.

This plan worked, as police believe Lovett was pictured in two photos taken at an ATM, driving Carson's Toyota Highlander with Atwater in the back seat. Police also believe Atwater was the suspect shown attempting to use Carson's ATM card inside a local convenience store.

The Board of Trustees at North Carolina offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in her death, and police reportedly have received hundreds of tips after the first two photos were released over the weekend.
