U2 Is Enthusiastic About Spider-Man "Opera"

Turn Off the Dark will be directed by Julie Taymor and feature songs by U2

Despite talks of financial trouble, U2 front men Bono and The Edge are enthusiastic about the upcoming Spider-Man musical on Broadway.

"Turn Off the Dark," the name of the Spider-Man musical scheduled for a 2010 opening in New York is directed by Julie Taymor and will feature a score written by the Irish band. In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation's Radio 1, Bono expressed real enthusiasm over the development of the musical. "We've got a new villain, it's a girl. It's a very extraordinary role. We've taken it to a much more dizzy place than you'd expect. We've got big tunes. We're very proud of it," Bono told Radio 1's Edith Bowman.

U2 guitarist The Edge compared "Turn Off the Dark" to an opera, rather than a musical. "It is much more like opera than a straight musical. We're actually not calling it a musical for that reason because we don't want to put people off," said The Edge, in the same interview.

"Turn Off the Dark's" Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who was described by Bono as a "slacker," will not be singing, although Evan Rachel Wood, who plays Parker's love interest, MJ, will be crooning for the crowds.
