U2 Rocks into the Bank

Band is named the most profitable music act of 2009.

U2 made a whopping $109 million last year, besting the second most profitable act, Bruce Springsteen, by double.

According to BBC News, 2009 was a big year for the group. They are still currently in the middle of a mammoth world tour known as the 360 Degree tour. According to Billboard magazine, touring is the most lucrative activity for artists.

The tour is the most expensive one ever staged, and is playing to large crowds.

Springsteen was second on the list for most profitable artists, earning $58 million last year. He was followed by Madonna with $47 million, and AC/DC with $44 million.

Following these acts were younger pop stars Britney Spears, Pink, and the Jonas Brothers.

Also on the list was Coldplay, the most successful British group, earning spot number 8 on the list and a taking of $27 million.

Michael Jackson was the top earner from CD and ringtone royalties last year due to his death, but only made it to the 20th overall spot on the list-- highlighting the importance of touring to a star’s overall earnings. Had the singer not died in June of last year, he may have had a higher place on the list due to his sold-out tour at London’s O2 Arena.
