The Ugly Truth about 'Ugly Betty's' Cancellation

The popular ABC comedy has been cancelled.

It's a sad day for Ugly Betty fans as ABC has decided to cancel the show at the end of the fourth season. The network has also cut back the number of episodes from 22 to 20. After the new and improved Betty (played by America Ferrera) worked so hard to get to her editor position, it turns out not to be Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) to take her down, but ABC.

The network is assuring viewers that they are allowing ample time for the writers to prepare a series finale. ABC President Steve McPherson and UB Executive Producer Silvio Horta released a statement saying, ". . .we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

The ratings for Ugly Betty started to slide after it was moved from Thursday nights to Friday night last fall. The show was then moved to Wednesday nights in a hope to boost ratings, but so far has failed to do so. Let's hope that the writers can 'satisfy' the show's loyal viewers despite this let down. The show airs Wednesdays at 10 ET/PT on ABC until mid-April.
