James Wolk last starred on television in Fox’s short-lived Lone Star, but he will return to a leading role in a new drama for USA Network, called Political Animals.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the casting Friday. The series deals with a divorced former First Lady who is now Secretary of State. She struggles with keeping her family together while also dealing with the State Department’s own issues. Wolk has been cast as her son and chief of staff.
Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark created the project, reports Deadline. Berlanti, who wrote for Brothers & Sisters is writing and will direct the first episode..
TV Line first reported that USA Network ordered the series in late January. It is a limited series, with six hours ordered. Mark is co-executive producer alongside Berlanti.
USA Network co-president Jeff Wachtel told TV Line that they had been interested in Berlanti “for years.” He added, “We can’t think of a better partner to be working with as we expand the storytelling reach of the network.”
The producers behind the show are Berlanti Productions and Laurence Mark Productions with Warner Horizon Television, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It should begin airing this summer. Political Animals is noted as a departure from the popular apolitical USA shows like Burn Notice, White Collar and Royal Pains.
No other cast members have been announced yet.
According to TV Guide, Wolk is currently appearing in recurring roles on Showtime’s Shameless and ABC’s Happy Endings.
