High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens is revealing the drastic measures she took to get into character for her upcoming film Gimme Shelter, in which she plays a homeless, pregnant teenager.

Hudgens appeared on The Rachael Ray Show, and told her that she had actually stayed in a homeless shelter prior to filming.

"I actually went and stayed in a shelter for two weeks before I started filming,” she said during the show, which aired Friday, E! Online reports. "I lived there with all the girls, with all the kids, so I think that it's really interesting because you find so much more about yourself."

And while some were wondering why she had chopped off her famous long locks a while back, this role is the reason.

"I actually cut my own hair for this movie. I did that to myself, yes I did," she told Ray, admitting that she and co-star Rosario Dawson "both look so messed up in this movie."

ET Online reports that Hudgens and Ray’s conversation took a slight turn from the film, to music’s biggest night this Sunday.

Speaking about the Grammys, Hudgens explained, “I mean I'm really excited to see Adele come back, considering she's been taking her rest and she's so amazing, I'm such a big fan of hers. She really is, her voice is just so stunning, so I'm excited to see her come back, yeah, working it!"

Hudgens’ film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island comes out in theaters Friday, February 10.
