VH1 takes 'Celebrity Rehab' off air for now

Chelsea Lewis

VH1 has decided not to give Celebrity Rehab a new season for 2012. VH1 also decided not to renew the spin off of Celebrity Rehab, Celebrity Rehab Presents Sober House as well. Celebrity Rehab had been very controversial, especially in light of recent events involving past participants.

Entertainment Weekly reported that VH1 had come under fire after two participants had died. Season two participant, Jeff Conaway, died after complications with prescription medications. Season three participant, Alice in Chains bassist, Mike Starr, died after mixing Xanax and alcohol.

Reuters added, that VH1 has not cancelled the show outright, instead, the show is simply not being picked up for a new season. VH1 has not ruled out that the show could come back at another point in time. Representatives for Celebrity Rehab said that not renewing the show doesn't necessary mean a bad thing, but it does not have the best connotation either.

Dr. Drew won't be off TV all together. Dr. Drew still has a show on HLN and on the CW network.

VH1 will instead be launching a new show called Relationship Rehab. The show will focus on positive ways to improve relationships and avoid abuse situations. No word yet on when VH1 would consider putting Celebrity Rehab back on the air.
