Wanda Sykes and Fox, round 2
Comedian Wanda Sykes has new weekly late night talk show host that premieres tonight at 11 on Fox. This will be the second time that Sykes has a show on the Fox network, the first being a situational comedy called "Wanda at Large."
"Wanda at Large' was placed in as a mid season replacement back in March 2003. It followed Fox's biggest hit "American Idol" which would almost guarantee viewers for her show considering it came right after the singing talent show.
Executives promised Sykes that they were completely behind the show and it was going to be a hit. That wasn't the case though, next fall it was moved to Friday nights which is a graveyard for failing or soon to be failing shows. Within a couple of weeks, "Wanda" was off the air.
This time around due to the surge in networks all trying to have a late night hit, for instance TBS with "Lopez Tonight" with host George Lopez. Another key factor is that Sykes has been moving on up to the A team as of late. She is part of a hit show on CBS starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus called "The New Adventures of Old Christine". Sykes also had a recent stand-up on HBO, was a speaker at the White House Correspondents dinner, and is a regular on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
According to NYTimes.com, "The new series faces plenty of challenges. It takes over the time period (11 p.m., Eastern and Pacific times; 10, Central time) that was occupied for 14 seasons by "MADtv," a sketch comedy show. While that show had a long run, Saturday night typically does not draw big audiences, and many of those watching television that late tune in to NBC's "Saturday Night Live," which begins a half-hour later."
