Warhol collection stolen
A multimillion-dollar collection of Andy Warhol paintings was stolen from a private home in Los Angeles.
Ten pieces, 40 inches square each, were taken from Richard Weisman's home. The collection, known as "The Athletes" series, featured pictures of football star O. J. Simpson, boxer Muhammad Ali, soccer phenom Pele, and tennis player Chris Evert, among others. The series was commissioned in the late '70s by Weisman himself, as he was a friend of Warhol's. Weisman is offering a $1 million reward for any leads on the return of his work.
The local police say the paintings were likely stolen on September 2 or 3, and their exact worth is not known. A longtime employee of Weisman noticed the paintings missing from their usual place in Mr. Weisman's living room when she arrived for work, and notified the police. It is unclear how the thieves got into the locked home, or how the paintings were taken. Weisman's home also contained other valuable works of art, but they remained untouched.
