Weight Watchers sues Jenny Craig for False Advertising
According to Reuters, Weight Watchers International Inc. filed a lawsuit on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court against Jenny Craig for falsely claiming in a TV commercial ad, featuring actress and spokesperson for the weight-loss company, Valerie Bertinelli, stating that “a major clinical trial” showed the company’s clients on average lost more than twice as much weight as “those on the largest weight loss program,” thus referring to Weight Watchers.
Weight Watchers even claims that Jenny Craig did not in fact conduct a major clinical trial comparing the companies’ products, and alleged that the studies cited were conducted 10 years apart and could not be useful in such a comparison.
In the court filing, Weight Watchers wants Jenny Craig to stop this ad campaign and run a corrective advertisement, including giving up improper profits and pay punitive damages among other remedies.
