British police hope that by releasing a photo of canoeist John Darwin, they will discover what he has been doing for the last five years.

On Monday, British police released a picture of John Darwin, the man who showed up at a police station five years after his death was declared in a canoe accident. This release is being done in an effort to determine where Darwin has been and what he has been doing for the last five years. According to ABC News, the canoeist is charged with obtaining money by deception and making a false declaration to procure a passport. If he is convicted, Darwin could spend up to 10 years in jail. Police have also arrested John's wife Anne, who is suspected of fraud.

British paper The News of the World apparently discovered a bricked-up doorway that led from the Darwin's home to a secret hideaway room. When friends and family visited the "widowed" Anne, John would hide in the other room. Anne told a British newspaper that the couple had hoped to slip away and start a tropical tourist resort in Panama. "It was a nice dream while it lasted", she stated to the Daily Mirror. However, the motive for Darwin's disappearance five years ago and reappearance remains unknown at this time.
