Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Celebrates 10 Years with $1,000
ABC's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and to celebrate, its original host, Regis Philbin came back Sunday night to host an 11-night tournament at its original prime-time lineup. The first contestant Sunday, Brad Abbey, won $1,000.
The 25-year-old laid-off commercial bank employee from Tampa Bay, Florida got to $1,000 but faltered at the following question: "Otto Von Bismarck is often credited with the cynical quip that 'laws are like' what, 'it's better not to see them being made'?He answered "paintings," but the correct answer was "sausage." Abbey got the spot of "Millionaire" two days after he was laid off. He now works at a carnival.
Back in 1999, when "Millionaire" debuted, it immediately became a hit, dominating the ratings with 15 million viewers per episode. The 2008 Oscar-nominated film "Slumdog Millionaire" also heavily featured the show.
The 10th anniversary version of the show included many changes, such as a different wardrobe and a time limit on answering each question. As of now, it is uncertain if the tournament is merely an anniversary event or the return of the show as a primetime series.
