WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will be playing himself in a cameo on The Simpsons on February 19.
The show's 500th episode will guest star Assange as a neighbor to the Simpson family after they are evicted from Springfield. Homer and Marge discover "the residents of Springfield are holding a secret town meeting to kick them out of Springfield for all of their shenanigans over the years," thus Assange becomes a sort of "new Flanders."
“The similarities end there," executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly . "He invites them over for a home movie and it’s an Afghan wedding being bombed.”
So how does one of the most controversial people come to land a spot on a landmark Simpsons episode?
Creator Matt Groening heard Assange was a fan, and sought the activist out for a guest appearance. Groening said that the producers "asked our casting director Bonnie Pietila — who had been able to unearth Thomas Pynchon and got Tony Blair to do the show — to find Mr. Assange. And she did."
Assange voiced the role of himself from Britain, the Daily Mail reports. As he is still under house arrest in Britain, the show's producers did not know Assange's location.
Due in court Wednesday, Assange is accused of sexually assaulting two WikiLeaks volunteers and is fighting his extradition to Sweden in Britain's Supreme Court.
So, will you be tuning in to watch Assange or for the other cameos in the 500th episode, who Jean says, "are more familiar to fans of the show. And much less controversial."
