Winslet an Early Winner at the Golden Globes

Kate Winslet wins best supporting actress.

Reuters is reporting that Kate Winslet, costar of the film, The Reader, has won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress. Winslet said she was shocked at receiving the award, going on to say, "I have a habit of not winning things." She thanked her costars and acknowledged the work of the other nominees including the main competitor, Penelope Cruz.

The Golden Globe Awards, which is returning after last year's writers' strike, presents awards for both television and movies. Their close proximity to next month's Academy Awards draws attention for its movie picks and is considered an early indicator of Oscar favorites.

This year's favorites for the Golden Globe best film drama include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Winslet's The Reader, and Revolutionary Road.
