Woman Loses Hands and Feet Due to Hospital Blunder

Hospital produces quadruple amputee.

On Friday, 32-year-old Tabitha Mullings was released from Brooklyn Hospital Center after having her hands and feet amputated. Two months ago, Mullings had been admitted to the hospital in pain and was diagnosed with a kidney stone. After receiving painkillers she was sent home, only to return after lapsing into a two-week semi-coma. It turned out that instead of a kidney stone, she had an infection that, after being untreated during her stay at the hospital, developed into sepsis and choked blood flow to her hands and feet, leaving doctors no choice but to amputate them (Fox News & N.Y. Daily News).

Mullings is suing the hospital for $100 million, having never received a blood test to check for the infection during her stay (Fox News).

"I want to thank God for giving me a chance to live through this," said Mullings. "My goal is to walk out of this hospital with my hands and legs before Christmas so I can spend it with my family and friends. The first thing I will do is hug my kids as tight as possible" (Gothamist.com).

Mullings will begin therapy at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation in midtown, optimistically stating that she knows this is the place that will get her back on her feet. Her lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, told the Daily News that Mullings is "a role model for those who suffer a tragedy."
