'Wonderland' Breaks New Records
After this weekend, there’s no doubt that Tim Burton has produced yet another hit. His latest film Alice in Wonderland has raked in a whopping $116.3 million at the box office. According to Entertainment Weekly, these impressive numbers set a new record for the biggest opening weekend for any film with a spring release date.
These grosses follow Friday’s record breaking debut for the biggest opening day receipts of any March release. In addition, the film also set a new record for IMAX theatres. Sales reached $11.9 million over the weekend marking IMAX’s biggest weekend gross in history. The article also states that IMAX theatres were sold out completely over the course of the weekend.
Additionally, 3D showings contributed to 65% of the box office receipts. Due to the success of both Burton’s Wonderland and James Cameron’s record breaking Avatar, audiences can surely expect the year’s most highly anticipated blockbusters to be released in 3D as well.
Following Wonderland, Brooklyn’s Finest took second place with $13.5 million and Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island came in third with $13.3 million. Rounding out the top five was Cop Out and Avatar with $9.1 million and $7.7 million, respectively.
