Worth the Watch: 'Fright Night'

Oliver Willis

Fright Night , directed by Craig Gillespie, sees a teenage boy discover exactly who it is that has moved in next door to him. Now everyone thinks they have bad neighbors, but this neighbor is the worst of all, he's not even alive! That's right, he's a vampire. And if having to live next door to a vampire isn't bad enough, he has taken an unhealthy interest in Charlie Brewster's mother and girlfriend. Now this teenage boy must single-handedly defend the people he loves by killing the vampire next door.

Now I know what you're thinking, frankly because I am thinking it too, this sounds extremely cheesy. Well yes, you are right, it does sound cheesy, but it also sounds entertaining. This film also sounds very similar to the film Disturbia, which was about a teenage boy who discovered his next-door neighbor was a serial killer. There are three major differences with this film, though. Number one, he is a vampire and number two, the vampire is played by Colin Farrell and also stars David Tennant. Number three, this is a remake of the 1985 black and white horror, so it can claim some originality.

Now I know some people are skeptical about Colin Farrell, but I have grown to like him. Since the film In Bruges, I have seen a whole different side to his acting abilities and I feel that having him in this picture is going to be a huge boost for it. It will also be very interesting to see how Tennant holds up in the world of cinema after taking the leap from the TV series Doctor Who. I am looking forward to seeing what he can bring to this film, and just how much of a capable actor he is outside of his Doctor Who role.

So yes, maybe this is not going to be the most successful film to come out this year, but it looks damn entertaining to me. Too often are we bombarded with serious, hard-hitting and factual films, that sometimes a vampire moving in next door might just be the thing to give us that entertaining evening we all look forward to.

Fright Night is out in cinemas August 19.
