Writing Parenting Humor

How I got my start as a parenting humorist

I get asked (a lot) how I got started writing. I don't mind telling the story, really I don't. But where to begin? I started writing poems and dribs and drabs in a journal as a teenager. And recently, for some reason I showed my very first journals to one of my sons. To my amazement, he was utterly fascinated that I had shown such prolific writings at an early age. (Either that or he had an ulterior motive for me to bake some of my famous chocolate chip cookies).

After my children were born, I continued to write in journals, sometimes on the computer, but mostly hand-written in journal books. With rambunctious children, sometimes, though we love them dearly (have to get that disclaimer in there) they drive us nuts.

My sister and I would spend hours on the phone, daily, talking about our kids. Mine were older than hers, so she'd want to know every detail about things like, when will their first tooth fall out, and is it OK to feed them mashed potatoes for breakfast (OK, I made that one up). We did, like moms do everywhere, yak about our kids...for hours, and hours.

So when people ask me how I started writing, I don't have to think long. My kids drove me to it.
