After missing the playoffs last year for the first time in over a decade, the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox on Sunday 4-2 to clinch the American League East, reports the New York Times. The Yankees dominated the weekend series, sweeping the Red Sox 3-0.
According to MLB.com, this is the Yankees 16th American League East title. The Yankees also reached the 100 win mark with today's victory. The New York Daily News states that 47,576 fans were in attendance at the new Yankee stadium to watch their team return to glory after last year's disappointing season.
This marks the Yankees' first playoff berth without manager Joe Torre, who was fired two seasons ago.
