YouTube will add about 3,000 films to its online video rental store.
YouTube has said that it plans to make movie rentals a new source of revenue for the website, The Wall Street Journal reported. Previously, YouTube has focused on homemade videos and has used ads as the major source of revenue.
The films will be offered to users in the United States. In addition to the 3,000 new titles will be reviews and behind-the-scenes movie extras.
According to USA Today, YouTube’s online rental service opened about 16 months ago. It so far has primarily offered independent films.
The average cost for YouTube movie rentals is $2.00 to $4.00. The expansion of available movies also comes at a time when consumers are highly favoring online rentals.
