Zohan and "Panda" at Theaters

Jack Black and Adam Sandler vied for the top spot at the box office this weekend.

Kung Fu Panda kicked it up a notch this weekend at the box office. It made about $60 million this weekend, since Friday, according to Reuters. The film is the third best opening in DreamWorks Animation's lineup, after the second and third Shrek movies, and is much better than their last opening with Bee Movie.

Up against Jack Black this weekend was Adam Sandler in his newest movie, You Don't Mess with the Zohan, where he plays and Israeli commando turned New York hairdresser. The movie came in at No. 3, making in the $40 million range. The thing about these two films heading up each other was the target audience. As it turned out, neither hit their target audience as well as they thought; the Panda audience was 71 percent people over 17, and Zohan's audience was 51 percent women, reported Reuters.

Sex and the City, on the other hand, ended up not just in third, but actually went down to No. 4, after its opening weekend, reported Reuters. In its place was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, making $22.8 million on its third weekend.

According to DreamWorks Animation marketing head, Panda "lends itself to additional chapters," even with the intense cost it took to make at $130 million, and even more than that to market worldwide, according to Reuters. Sandler's movie ended up in fourth place after Click, for his best first weekend opening where his best was The Longest Yard opening at $47.6 million, reported Reuters.
