Courtney Love Gets an Apology for Cobain Ads
Courtney Love has garnered an apology from Dr. Marten. The shoe company's new campaign featuring dead rockers wearing their shoes in heaven included a spot with Nirvana front-man Kurt Cobain. The head of the company issued an apology to Ms. Love and the company covered all their bases by firing the guy who came up with the campaign in the first place. Other deceased rockers featured in the ads include Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, Joey Ramone of the Ramones, and Joe Strummer from the Clash. Britain's laws involving using deceased persons' images in advertising are far less stringent than in the U.S. The ads were only approved for use in the U.K.
Love had not heard anything about the ads beforehand. The 42-year-old was outraged to learn of the ads, which were leaked earlier this past month online. The responsible party is London-based Saatchi & Saatchi, which has defended their ads. They claim the photos of all the stars were legally purchased from Corbis. Corbis is one of the largest stock photo companies in the world. Saatchis & Saatchis called the ads "edgy but not offensive."
