Girl Power is Back

Spice Girls reunite for world tour in December.

It's the year of reunions for 90s musical acts. The latest group to mend their broken fences is Girl-Power group The Spice Girls. This is no Britney Spears-esque mini-comeback either. The girls are doing the thing right, with a world tour planned to kick off in December. They've also got a greatest hits album in the works-the reason for the tour, writes Gil Kaufman of MTV.com.

The five member pop group enjoyed a rapid rise to fame in the mid 90s, continues MTV's Kaufman. The group sold a phenomenal 55 million records in their brief 6-year run, starting in 1994 with the girls answering an ad placed in a London music trade magazine. Their monster hit "Wannabe" carried the group to fame with their debut record "Spice" selling close to 2 million copies in Britain within two months, writes Kaufman. The sophomore album, "Spiceworld" came out less than a year later, followed by the film "Spiceworld" in late 1997. In 1998, Ginger Spice, a.k.a. Gerri Halliwell, split from the group on bad terms. The four remaining members, Posh (Victoria Beckham), Baby (Emma Bunton), Scary (Melanie Brown), and Sporty (Melanie Chisholm), carried on, releasing an album in 2000 entitled "Forever," before splitting less than a year later.

Their reunion tour is under the direction of "American Idol" mastermind Simon Fuller's company's direction. Fuller was the group's manager during their heyday. The Spice Girls will also participate in the very first official TV documentary on their success, reports The Associated Press.
