Country singer arrested on assault charges
Country singer Mindy McCready is facing assault charges after allegations were made of her assaulting her mother.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Larry King, McCready entered her mother's home in North Fort Myers after a night of drinking. McCredy's mother called police around 1 a.m. and reported that her daughter was drunk and unruly.
"Her mom had facial scratches when officers arrived, and that's what led to the arrest." King said. The 31-year-old singer resisted arrest, forcing a female officer to wrestle her to the ground.
According to reports in the News-Press, McCready accused Lee County deputies of using excessive force during her arrest. "Florida law states that the primary aggressor is to be arrested, and Ms. McCready was the primary aggressor in this case," King explained.
Saturday's arrest was added to a long list of altercations between McCready and law enforcement throughout recent years.
The singer was booked into the Lee County Jail Saturday morning, with bail posted at $1,000 on Sunday. According to King, McCready became unruly at the station refusing to be handcuffed and had to be subdued with a pepper spray-like chemical.
McCready is scheduled to return to court in September for sentencing on her probation violation.
