Roman Catholic Priest Faces New Sex Abuse Charges

Preist faces new sex abuse charges that he molested two boys.

A Roman Catholic priest at the forefront of a sex abuse cover-up was taken into custody in Chicago. He faces charges that he molested two U.S. boys.

According to the Reuters web site, “Donald McGuire, who once worked with a group linked to Mother Teresa, traveled to Switzerland and Austria in 2000 to engage in sexual misconduct with a minor who is now 21, according to charges unsealed by the U.S. Attorney's office on Friday.”

McGuire, who worked with Mother Teresa and is said to be a flight risk, is being held without bond. If he is convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

This is not the first time McGuire has had problems with the law. According to the Chicago Tribune’s web site, "McGuire, 77, was convicted last year in Wisconsin of molesting two students from Loyola Academy in Wilmette during trips near Lake Geneva in the 1960s, that state’s statute of limitations does not apply to out-of-state residents.”

McGuire’s nephew, Adam McGuire, is representing two of the accusers in their civil suits against the priest and hopes doing so will offer their families some degree of closure to the incident. “There’s certainly vindication in the filing of criminal charges, given McGuire’s influence and support extends across the country,” he said.
