Alias: Three Years and Still Kicking

Written by: Emily Assad

Alias continues to entertain and surprise the viewers

Saving the world can sometimes be easier than actually living in it. After three seasons of unrequited love, family issues, and vengeance, ABC's "Alias" continues to prove that this is still not your ordinary spy show.

What makes this show so different? Is it the unique missions the characters are sent on? Or the truth that unwinds over the seasons? Maybe it is the chemistry between characters Agent Sydney Bristow and Agent Michael Vaughn? The answer - all of the above.

Creator J.J. Abrams is no newcomer when it comes to creating unique dramas and a distinct script. To name a few, Abrams has written the screenplays for "Regarding Henry," "Armageddon," "Forever Young," and most recently, the creator and writer of college angst drama series "Felicity." But his genius does not stop here; he is the next in line to take over writing credits for the third installment of Spiderman.

Throughout these three seasons, Abrams has taken main character Sydney Bristow through a journey of self-discovery and adventure. Once an agent unknowingly working for the enemy, SD-6, Sydney joins the CIA to save the country. Throw in a love story between her coworker Agent Vaughn, family problems dealing with her CIA father and former KGB mother, and her constant battles saving the world and viewers will see that Alias brings something different to television.

The biggest part of the show's success is actress Jennifer Garner. Her role as Sydney Bristow has won her both critical acclaim and a Golden Globe Award for best actress in a drama series. Her stock in Hollywood is still climbing. Next month, her first leading role in "13 Going on 30" hits the big screen. After that, she will reprise her "Daredevil" role in the spin-off, "Elektra."

The supporting actors also play a big role in the show. Playing Jack Bristow, actor Victor Garber takes on the role as Sydney's father, the unapproachable agent battling to keep his daughter safe. Michael Vartan plays Sydney's love interest Agent Michael Vaughn. Garner and Vartan's chemistry is evident on and off the show. Recently, a relationship has developed off the camera for this pair. Playing Sydney's former SD-6 boss, Ron Rifkin's portrayal of Arvin Sloane always brings a new twist to the story line. Abrams also adds former "Felicity" cast members Greg Grunberg, Kevin Weisman and Amanda Foreman to the supporting cast.

With only a few more episodes to go, "Alias" is not trying to bring the season to a conclusion. That is what they stray from. The episodes leading up to the finale is what this show thrives on. Case in point, late into the first season, viewers find out that Sydney's mother may still be alive. Then comes season two, Sydney brings down SD-6 and finally gets together with Agent Vaughn but loses him when one day, she wakes up to realize two years of her life has been erased and Vaughn is now married.

Who knows what the end of season three will bring, but rest assured, Alias will accomplish what it does best - end with a bang.
