WGA Strike Recap- Week 1
12-Nov-2007
Written by: Kimberly Lovisi
The Writers Guild of America have officially been on strike for one week.
The WGA has officially been on strike for one week, and every day it goes on the TV fan in me dies a little bit more. Okay maybe that’s a little dramatic, but the writers are the backbone of the industry; it can’t survive without them. The WGA is fighting to be fairly compensated for new media types, such as iTunes downloads, internet streaming and DVD sales.
So within the week they have been on strike what effect has it had on our favorite shows? NBC's "The Office," for one, had to shut down due to the fact that many of the actors on the show are writers, including Steve Carell, and had to do their duty on the picket line. CBS' "The New Adventures of Old Christine" had to shut down as well because Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a member of the WGA and chose to walk the picket line.
"The Big Bang Theory," "Rules of Engagement" and "Two and a Half Men," also on CBS, stopped production as well. Fox‘s "Til Death" and ABC’s "Desperate Housewives" also closed up shop. Another huge blow for FOX is the indefinite postponement of the new season of “24,” which is a surefire ratings hit for them, according to Reuters.
Nighttime talk shows shut down immediately, since they need writers to keep up to date material in the monologues. Let’s hope they reach a settlement soon, I don’t think I can take anymore of this.
