Stagehand Strike Wages On Devastating the Area
The stagehand strike on Broadway will continue through the Thanksgiving holiday as intense talks last night between producers and stagehands broke down, according to a report by the New York Daily News. Both sides left the table late last night without scheduling any further talks.
Charlotte St. Martin, the executive director of the League of American Theatres and Producers, announced, “Out of respect for our public and loyal theatergoers, many of whom are traveling from around the world, we regret that we must cancel performances through Sunday, Nov. 25.”
St. Martin also placed blame on the stagehands, saying, “the union rejected our effort to compromise.” The main point of contention in the struggle is over benefits and work rules, with producers demanding flexibility in staffing “load-ins,” the setting up of stages for the shows.
Monday marks the tenth day of the strike, and the effects are slashing Broadway area businesses and employees. An area waiter, Alexandre Tennenbaum, was let go from work on Saturday because there was no one in the restaurant he works at. “I got so upset,” the 26 year-old said, “I have things to pay – rent and school. To give me the day off, especially on a Saturday, is a waste of money.” Tennenbaum says he has lost $800 in tips since the strike began.
