Non-Boondocks Material

What was Aaron thinking???

Every Friday night, AdultSwim.com releases the video leak of each The Boondocks episode, before it premieres on Cartoon Network on Monday nights. After taking a sneak peak at next week’s episode, “Shinin’,” I wondered, "What was Aaron McGruder thinking?" Even though some of the jokes in the yet-to-be-aired episode were funny, the plot was not The Boondocks material.

The episode starts off with Riley hanging out in rapper Thugnificent’s mansion while he’s taping an episode of MTV Cribs. Riley stands behind the scenes while Thugnificent escorts the cameras around the house. Riley then goes through a pledging-type process where he must show courage and loyalty in order to get initiated into Thugnificent’s group, Lethal Injection, and get a blinged out chain. He passes, receives his chain and flaunts it so people can hate on him – in a good way. Eventually the “hate” he loves so much takes a toll on him when a bully – a lot bigger than he is – takes his chain, after knocking him on the ground unconscious. After telling Huey and his Lethal Injection crew members, Riley gets his chain back and rocks it just as hard as before it got jacked from him.

It’s weird and unnatural to call an episode of The Boondocks wack – especially after the “Tom, Sarah and Usher” episode, in which Tom does his own rendition of the Usher song “Burn” – but this one was wack! The plot was terrible; even though some of the jokes were funny – like when Granddad was telling Riley about a Friday movie scene mistaken for an incident in his life – this story was not fit for an actual episode. What was Aaron thinking? Hopefully the rest of the season will get better after this disappointment.

Some of the characters in this episode were voiced by Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Charlie Murphy, Sway and DeRay.
