Mayweather stops Britsh boxer to remain undefeated
At 1:35 of the 10th round, Ricky Hatton's corner had had enough. As the British boxer went to the mat for the second time they threw in the towel. It ended one of the most heavily anticipated boxing matches of the year, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. retained his welterweight championship. He remains undefeated, pushing his record to 39-0 with 25 KO's. According to ESPN.com, it took a few rounds for Mayweather to get comfortable against Hatton's relentless, aggressive style, but once he did, he let his hands go and pummeled Hatton with one combination after another.
"I took my time. I fought inside and outside. A true champion can adapt to anything," Mayweather said after the fight.
Although he was humbled in front of an overwhelmingly pro-Hatton crowd (most of the 16,000+ in attendance had come all the way from England), the Brit showed that he can take defeat with a sense of humor. "What a fluke that was," he said. "He was better inside than I thought... He wasn't the biggest welterweight I've seen, but I felt the difference"
In typical Mayweather fashion, he hinted at retirement after the fight. When approached about a possible fight against WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, he replied" He's a hell of a champion, and there are great guys at 154 (pounds), but I have done everything I can do in the sport of boxing and I am not going to fight anybody."
We'll see how fast his attitude changes once the money making potential of that proposed match up starts to be discussed.
